How to stop self-sabotaging your life?

“Self-sabotage is when we say we want something and then go about making sure it doesn't happen.” - Alyce Cornyn-Selby

Our excuses lie between where we are in life and where we want to be. I can’t remember how many times I decided not to do something and immediately it hindered my progress. I realized I must keep going, sometimes that’s all I need. I am a thinker so whenever I want to do something, I think about it and decide if it’s a good decision or not. This often hinders me because I get caught up in the outcomes. Sometimes the decision to keep going is outweighed by the repercussions.

Thinking before we do is good but don’t get caught in your thoughts that you can’t make a decision. Our bodies are made to protect us. When we think too much about a decision, we often become more confused between the choices to pick. Have you ever found yourself confused after you told yourself you will sleep on it? After sleeping on it sometimes we are still confused. The truth is deep down we know what decisions to make it’s the fear that stops us.

Last week I wrote about what I was afraid of because my fear was the reason for my choices in life. Trying to better yourself and achieve the things you want in life is scary. Uncertainty is the reason why most people are upset with where they are in life. There are so many talented people in this world. I know plenty of them and they have gifts that the world will never see because of the excuses situated between them and their dreams.

I always make it my job to encourage others to just go for it. Don’t think about it, just do it. This is something I must tell myself because I let fear, excuses, and uncertainty get in the way numerous of times. It caused so many setbacks and I realized we don’t have to think about it. What we want to do is already in us. We know we are capable, but we get so focused on the end goal that we don’t remember to take it one day at a time.

I recently was discussing weight and being healthy with a few of my colleagues and one person told me they can’t lose weight. Trying to lose weight is one of most people goals. Obesity in America is serious. We are constantly surrounded by fast food. The healthy restaurants are expensive, so most people opt for what’s cheap, fast, and covenant. Trying to lose weight can be stressful. I learned that you must stay consistent. I experienced drastic changes in my life when I worked out 7 days a week for a complete year. It was tough but I made it through now I work out 5 days a week, but it took me being consistent in my diet and exercise. Most people are not willing to give themselves a year. They give up after months, but long-term results take more than months.

Anything that gives you quick results is never sustainable. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard it just most people don’t want to do the work it takes to get there. We must be honest with ourselves. We must be willing to look at our decisions and ask is this decision beneficial to our end goal?  I didn’t want to do the work; I wanted a fairy godmother to come into my life and give me all the things I wanted and needed in life. There’s no satisfaction in having someone else fix our life. We know this for ourselves but we still long for it. I know that when I accomplish something, I worked hard to achieve, I feel so much better.

Our life is a reflection of the choices we have made. If you love your life, then you haven’t allowed excuses to ruin it. If you hate your life, figure out what is blocking you from living the life that you dream of. There are going to roadblocks alone the way, fear, and uncertainty but don’t let it stop you. Your focus should be on how you want your life to be. Let this be the driver of your life. When I think about my future I smile because I know that I’m heading in the right direction. My favorite saying to my children is this is not how my life will always be this is only temporary. Everything is temporary unless we allow it to become permanent.

What do you want in life? What are you doing to achieve it? If you are not working towards what you want how are you going to achieve it? Stop waiting on a fairy godmother they don’t exist. We are the fairy godmothers of our life so stop letting yourself down. Stop beating yourself up about your past. Move forward and break down any walls that you built alone the way. You can have the life you dream of you just have to be willing to do the things to achieve it.

“Most people sabotage themselves because they aren't mindful in the moment. Let your daily actions be governed by your goals & dreams. Whenever you are making an important decision first ask if it gets you closer to your goals or farther away. If the answer is closer, pull the trigger. If it's farther away make a different choice. Conscious choice making is a critical step in making your dreams a reality.”
- Jillian Michaels

The questions isn’t how will you achieve it, the questions is when are you going to start?
