Is Time Management Important?

Knowing how to manage your time is key to living a successful life. If were honest with ourselves most people waste a lot of time doing nothing. We spend more time on social media, YouTube, Pinterest, and a lot of other sites. According to an article on Digital Information World website the average American age 16-24 spends three hours on social media. That’s 21 hours a week and 1092 hours a year. Which means we spend 45.5 days wasting time on things that bring no value to our lives. This number doesn’t include the time you spend watching television or playing video games. Though social media is used as a form of communication for this generation you can’t waste time engaging with your friends online if you are trying to make changes to your life. The ratio of leisure time should never outweigh the time you put into your goals because if it does you won’t be able to accomplish them.

My husband is always telling me to relax because I am constantly busy, but I can’t relax. I don’t like wasting my time. Once you waste time you won’t be able to get it back. So, when I make decisions, I ask myself if it’s worth my time? If it is, I do it, if it’s not, I don’t. It’s that simple.  I know when to give myself a break and I know when I must keep moving. If my day is not productive, I’m upset with myself. Since I don’t like living with regrets, I make sure I use my time wisely. If I get a lot of things accomplished, then I decide if I should reward myself. I use social media daily because it is a useful tool when you are trying to brand yourself. I also like to interact with people and network at various events to grow my following. If you are using social media to accomplish your goals and grow your business per say, then it’s okay to spend three hours on social media.

When I started creating a to do list this also help me manage my time. I devoted myself to that list and once it was complete, I could have leisure time. People think taking time for yourself means laying around being lazy surfing the internet but making time for yourself also means making time for your goals. When I make time for my goals, I count that as leisure time because I enjoy working on things I am passionate about. When you are passionate about something you can spend hours on it without being exhausted.

One of the complaints I hear for people is that they don’t have time. You must create time. If you know you want to be at work earlier go to bed thirty minutes earlier than your normal bed time and wake up thirty minutes early and then increase the time until you are satisfied with it. This is just one of many things you can do to learn how to manage your time. If I know I want to get up at a certain time I set my alarm thirty minutes earlier than the time I want to get up so I can ensure I get up at the appropriate time.

Learning how to manage your time takes mini steps that lead to big accomplishments. If you want to accomplish your goals, you must start evaluating how you choose to spend your time. If time is an excuse, then you don’t want a solution. If you are passionate about making a difference in your life, then you will figure out how you can do something. If you are not passionate about it then time will always be an excuse.

Ask yourself today are you using your time wisely? I know you’re tired, but we all get tired, but you must decide what is worth being tired over. If it’s something that’s going to improve your future, then do it, if it isn’t then don’t. It’s that simple. If you want to make changes in your life it is going to require you to learn how to manage your time.

“He who every morning plans the transactions of that day and follows that plan carries a thread that will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy life.”

― Victor Hugo
