Be The Reason Someone Smile Today

This past weekend I attended St. Jude’s Ride For Reasons Heroes Fundraiser. St. Jude’s foundation was founded by Danny Thomas. Danny Thomas dreamed that “no child should die in the dawn of life”. The foundation helps parents of children battling cancer and life threating diseases with treatment, travel, housing, or food. St. Jude believes that parents should only have to worry about helping their child live. St. Jude mission is to find cures to save children lives. When I saw the event advertisement, I felt like I needed to be apart of it. I love charity and fundraisers. I believe that one small act can make a difference in someone life. While I was there at the fundraiser I listen to the stories of the patients and a parent who child was treated by the St. Jude hospital. I felt so emotional because at that point I knew I was doing something to make a difference in someone else’s life. Though I don’t have all the money in the world just that simple act of service was enough to make a difference in someone life.

When I was on the rode to Charlotte, I seen a sign that read “Be The Reason Someone Smile Today,” and at that point I knew that I was already making a difference just by attending the St. Jude fundraiser. I am one of those persons that enjoy helping people. My husband tells me all the time that I am to nice, but I don’t know how to be any other way. I am a very compassionate person. I cry when I see other people suffering. I do believe that we shouldn’t solve anything with violence, but I know a lot of people may disagree and that’s okay. I have always been this way. I remember when I use to pray before bed as a child and I would pray for all my family and then I would say I pray for the whole world. I didn’t like death. I know its apart of life, but I just didn’t like hearing about people getting hurt.

Of course, death from old age was acceptable but I never really liked violence. I do believe you should stand up for yourself and defend for your life if you are in danger, but I disagree with people going around causing conflict. Most things can be worked out thorough discussion not every disagreement should end in violence. I never seen anything that end in violence turn out good. I believe Martin Luther King Jr when he said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” We must start being compassionate and loving one another. I know sometimes its hard being nice to difficult people but try it I promise it will make their day.

I can recall working in customer service, and I had the nastiest, mean, and disrespectful customers but I always remain kind. Most of them were going through a tough time in their life because anyone that is truly happy doesn’t treat people like crap. You know that feeling you have when you are in a good mood you want to give everyone the world but when you feel like crap you hate everybody. That’s the mood of unhappy people. Hurt people do hurt people and its sad but it’s the truth. My kindness is the main reason why people are so drawn to me. It keeps people intrigued. They wonder why I can smile even when it seems like my whole world is falling apart and trust me it feels like that sometimes. That’s the reason why I am kind to people. I know that sometimes we don’t feel like ourselves. We feel sad and unmotivated but when someone is kind to us it makes everything that is going wrong in our life seem okay.

So, ask yourself today do you want to be the reason why someone smiles or the reason why someone frowns? Our words are powerful, and it don’t take much to be kind. It’s the little things that get notice. Simple things like saying hello to a stranger. Texting someone you love how much you appreciate them. Taking a love one on a coffee date. Writing a note to a friend. Being kind doesn’t cost. So, as you go about your day be the reason someone smiles. A simple act of kindness can change someone life.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"-Martin Luther King Jr
