New Year Resolutions

This is the time of the year when people are committing to new goals, also known as New Year Resolutions. Financial goals, fitness goals, and relationship goals, all sorts of goals are being started. People committing again to things they may not have completed in the previous year. According to businessinsider.com “80% of New Year resolutions fail by February.” People are always committing to things, but not finishing them. It’s exciting when a new year comes, but why do we wait until a new year to start making new commitments? A new year doesn’t automatically mean all of your problems from the previous years just vanish. A new year is only an indication of time changing. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not against New Year resolutions, I think they are good, only if you are committed to them. Sometimes a New Year resolution can help motivate someone who isn’t easily motivated. People often believe that a new year is a fresh start, but leaving your troubles in the previous year will not fix them. We have to face our problems head on, and fix them, so we can move on with our lives. Every year I take sweets out of my diet for three months. I love sweets, and I often over indulge in them, so this is a way for me to practice self control. I also make new goals for the year, but that’s not the only time I commit to goals. I make mini goals throughout the year because I don’t believe in waiting until a new year, to make a resolution. A resolution is a firm decision to decide to do, or not do something, and each day we are on earth, is a fresh start. We can choose to make changes in our lives any day, we don’t need a new year to help us commit to it. Growth is the ultimate goal for me, and I know that in order for me to continue to grow, I have to be willing to better myself each day. So, as you make your New Year resolutions, don’t think that you have to only do them at the beginning of the year, you can start a new year resolution on any day. Life is short, and if you wait till a new year to start over, it might be too late. 

 

How to stay committed to your New Year resolutions?

  • Write down your goals.

Buy a notebook at the dollar store, or Walmart, and write your goals in the notebook. You don’t need a fancy book, all you need is something you can write in, so you can keep up with it.

  • Look at your goals everyday.

When you look at your goals everyday, you’ll always be reminded of what you are striving for.

  • Analyze your goals!

Write each goal on a separate piece of paper, and look at each one. Write down how you are going to attain them, and get started. For example, if you want to buy a house, or car, what ever you want to buy, list ways on how you are going to buy them. Maybe you have to cut back on eating out, or taking lavish trips. Maybe you might need to work overtime at your job. Whatever the goal is you have, write down ways that are going to help you attain them.

  • Work on one goal at a time.

We all want to complete our goals, but it’s better to work on them, one at a time. When we don’t focus on one goal at a time, then we become overwhelmed, and more likely to quit, before we complete them.

  • Don’t give up! 

Whatever you want to buy. Whatever you want to change about yourself, or situation, takes time. You won’t see results on your first try, be patient.  Change doesn’t happen overnight, just continue to commit yourself to your goals each day, and you’ll complete them.

 

Whatever goals, changes, or New Year Resolutions you have set for this year, commit to it each day, don’t be the 80%, instead strive to be the 20%.
