According to the Complaint Free Website the average person complains 15-30 times a day. When I read this, I was blown away. Not everyone complains but most people in the world do. I was recently discussing this topic with a colleague of mind because he was complaining, and I had to stop him in mid-sentence to let him know that he was ruining his health through his words. He was like really? I said yes sir. When we complain it effects our mental and physical health. Though this may sound strange to some people it’s true. Taking care of yourself starts with your attitude. The way we think and the words that come out of our mouth can be damaging to our soul.
When you complain your body releases the stress hormone cortisol. When cortisol is released it shifts our body into fight-or-flight mode. This biochemical response causes increase heart rate, breathing become more rapidly, and it increases perspiration. The flight-or-fight puts our body in survival mode as a way to protect us.
That adrenaline rush that people talk about is basically what this is. Our senses become sharper and we become alert when our body is taken through this type of stress. This is good if you’re trying to protect yourself because a vicious animal is chasing after you. If you’re not fearing for your life this is not good.
If you complain often it will have damaging effects on your body. Constantly complaining increases cortisol in your blood stream which leads to a weaker immune system because your body can’t fight off illnesses when it’s stressed. Complaining increases your blood pressure which can cause various diseases in your body including heart disease. Complaining also increases your risk of high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. Increased stress on the body makes our brain more susceptible to strokes. As you can see complaining does more harm than good.
I understand we all have days when stuff bothers us but if you learn how to address it in a healthier way then it won’t be so damaging to the body. In life it’s best to let things go. When I realized the damaging effects of complaining I knew that I could no longer allow it to be a part of my life.
Listening to someone else complain is also damaging to our body so even if we don’t complain when we listen to others complain it also affects us. So, I try to avoid complainers and if I hear someone complain I explain to them the damaging effects of complaining. People don’t know what they don’t know and if they did, they probably wouldn’t be complaining.
So, the more you complain the more you are at risk of diseases. When we constantly complain our blood pressure and oxygen increases, the oxygen is taken from other areas in our body that needs it and sends it to the brain. Complaining causes damaging effects to the hippocampus in the brain. The part of the brain that we use for cognitive function and problem solving. Complaining shrinks the hippocampus the primary part of the brain effected by Alzheimer’s disease. The hippocampus is unable to receive the energy it needs to function properly when our body is taken though constant stress.
Complaining stresses our body out and though we might not think venting per say is bad for the body, it is. Our body was not meant to be put through stress and no matter how healthy you think you are if you don’t take care of your brain your body can’t function properly. Stress is one of the top killers in America and so many people are killing their selves through self-inflicted behavior. Life can sometimes be hard. People make us upset. We are not always satisfied with life outcomes, but we must learn how to address issues in a way that is positive to our body. Our body cannot operate efficiently when it is constantly stressed. So, before you start complaining ask yourself is this worth the damaging effects it causes to the body?
So, as you go about your day remember complaining is damaging to your whole body. It doesn’t matter how healthy you think you are, if you complain you’re damaging your central nervous system. When your body can’t function properly it’s unable to fight diseases that may be fatal to your body. Don’t allow the world to dictate your wellbeing it’s time to take your life back and that starts with learning not to complain. We can’t change what happens to us, but we can choose how we react to what happens to us. So today I want you to let go of what isn’t doing your body good. If its people let them go if it’s your attitude about life release it. If you want to live a healthy life it starts with eliminating complaining.
